- Former Newcastle United, Stockport County, Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town forward who played for the club during the 2004/05 season. Went on to manage the club for just over 4 years. Armstrong had led Blyth Spartans back to the National League North. Having previously been linked to the Darlington job he was appointed manager in May 2019 following the departure of Tommy Wright. Armstrong's time at the club was interupted by Covid however there were some notable achievements. Under Armstrong Quakers made their first appearance in the FA Cup 1st Round since being demoted to the Northern League. When the 2019/20 finished early due to Covid restrictions the club was placed 10th in the division. The following season Armstrong led the club to the FA Cup 2nd Round and an FA Trophy Quarter Final. Armstrong's side showed terrific form in the first half of the 2022/23 season. This saw Darlington go top of the league. However Darlington's form nose dived after Christmas and Armstrong was unable to arrest the slide. Early in the 2023/24 season Armstrong was sacked as the previous season's poor form continued with the club bottom of the table in September.
