- Joined Darlington during the dreadful 2009/10 season which saw the club relegated from the football league. Prior to his arrival at Darlington Byrne played for Shamrock Rovers and Scottish side Dunfermline Athletic. He helped them reach the 2004 Scottish Cup Final, where they were beaten 3–1 by Celtic at Hampden Park. Joined Aberdeen in January 2005. Departed in April 2008 and had trials at Wigan, N.E.C Nijmegen and Oldham Athletic. In January 2009, Byrne joined Inverness Caledonian Thistle on a contract until the end of the season. He was then loaned to First Division club St Johnstone and following Inverness's relegation at the end of the 2008/09 season he was released. Joined Darlington in February 2010 but made little impact.
