Biography

Andrew Nelson signed on loan from Sunderland in December 2018 and scored six goals in his first five matches—twice against Chorley, twice against York City, and another two against Ashton United. His second goal against Ashton United was among the best of the 2018/19 season. Nelson impressed while on loan with the Quakers, and although manager Tommy Wright hoped to secure his services for longer, he returned to Sunderland early in January 2019. Nelson later departed Sunderland for Scottish Premiership club Dundee and scored on his debut against Hearts. He was released by the Scottish club in the summer of 2020 after making 39 appearances. He then joined Torquay United in the National League, but just three weeks after signing, he suffered a knee injury and was unable to play. Nelson subsequently trained with Darlington ahead of the 2021/22 season. Although not yet fully fit, he managed to score a goal against Blyth Spartans. However, his knee injury persisted, and he opted to undergo surgery. Nelson was released in May 2022 but was later invited back to train with the club. In March 2023, he re-signed and finished the 2022/23 season with three goals, including a brace against Fylde. At the end of the season, manager Alun Armstrong offered him a two-year deal. Nelson made regular appearances during the 2023/24 season and finished with five goals. Midway through the campaign, Steve Watson took over as manager. While Nelson scored three of his goals under the new boss, he struggled to hold down a regular place in the side during the following season. He netted five more times during his final campaign with the club before being released.
