- Joined Darlington ahead of the 2024/25 season. Played for York City from the age of 7 and worked his way through the age groups, playing for their academy in successive National League Cup finals. Darlington manager Steve Watson kept an eye on Payne’s progress since he was York manager, and invited him to take part Darlington's preparations ahead of the 2024/25 season. Payne impressed enough and signed ahead of the season.
