- Former Sunderland and Oxford United midfielder who joined the club ahead of the 1999/00 season. He was part of the squad which played at Wembley in the Division Three Play-Off final that season. Played the following season as the club struggled in the league. After the 2000/01 campaign he moved into a coaching role at the club. Gray tookover as caretaker manager following the departure of Dave Penney to Oldham in April 2009. With the club in adminstration Gray, along with other staff, were let go. He worked alongside Penney at Oldham as his assistant. In May 2012 Gray was appointed Darlington manager following their demotion to the Northern League. Under Gray's management the club won the division with a record points haul. The following season Gray led the club to second place in the Northern Premier League Division One. However they lost in the play-off semi-finals to Ramsbottom United. The 2014/15 season however saw Darlington clinch promotion via the play-offs. The 2015/16 season was even better as the club won the Northern Premier League Premier Division title. Gray established the club in National League North division, however despite finishing fifth in the 2016/17 season the club was not allowed to compete in the play-offs due to ground grading issues. Gray resigned from his post early the following season stating he believed he had taken the club as far as he could.
