- Turnbull started his career at Middlesbrough as an apprentice. Made several appearances during their promotion winning season of 1986/87. He left Middlesbrough in 1987, joining Aston Villa for a £50,000. However he never made an impact at Villa Park. Eventually joined Doncaster Rovers where he made 150 league and cup appearances. Spells at Wycombe Wanderers and Scunthorpe United between 1994 and 1997. Joined Darlington during the 1997/98 season.
