- Matthews began his carerr at Leeds United in 1996. He made three substitute appearances for Leeds in the Premier League in early 1998. In late September 1998 he joined Notts County of the Second Division on a one-month loan deal. He returned to Leeds after five appearances. Due to an injury, he had to wait until the end of March 2000 to see first-team action again, joining Gillingham on loan until the end of the season. In March 2001 he joined Bristol City on loan and he was signed permanently for £100,000. Between 2001 and 2004 he played just over 40 games for Bristol City. During his time at City he went out on loan to Darlington during the 2003/04 season.
