Biography

Former York City, Sunderland and Derby County forward who spent two seasons with the club and scored over 50 goals. Considered by many Darlington fans to be one of the best players to play for the club. Started his career at York City. He quickly established himself at the club under manager Dennis Smith. When Smith left York for Sunderland Gabbiadini followed him in 1987 for a fee of £80,000. He went on to make over 150 appearances for Sunderland and scored over 70 goals. Shortly after the start of the 1991/92 season Gabbiadini was sold to Crystal Palace for £1.8 million. Unfortuantly he failed to live up to exceptations at Palace and was sold a few months later to Derby County. He played near 200 games for the Rams but when the club won promotion to the top flight appearances became harder to find. Spells at Birmingham City, Oxford United and Panionios in Greece all followed. Gabbiadini then had a short spell at Stoke mid-way through the 1997/98 season and returned to York on loan but he was hampered by injuries during this period. He joined Darlington in time for the 1998/99 season and proved an instant hit with fans. He scored 25 times in his first season and a further 28 times during the 1999/00 season. He left Darlington at the end of that season as the club lost in the Division Three play-off final. He joined Northampton Town, the side who had beaten the Quakers to automatic promotion that season.
