- Gary Smith began his career in the academy at hometown club Middlesbrough and signed his first professional contract in July 2002. He was eventually released at the end of the 2003/04 season. He then joined MK Dons but was in and out of the first team during his four years there. Despite this he went on to make over 70 appearances for the club. In August 2007 he signed a one year with Brentford who had just been relegated to league two. An ankle injury reduced Smith to just four appearances during the 2008/09 season. He was released in May 2009. Smith then joined Darlington on a free transfer in July 2009.
