- Wainwright began his career as a trainee at Wrexham in July 1996 before joining Sunderland for a fee of £100,000 in July 1998. He made only a handful of appearances for the Black Cats before joining Darlington on loan during the 1999/00 season. He then had a spell on loan at Halifax Town before completing a permanent deal to Darlington in August of 2001. Became a fan favourite at the club. Was eventually released from the club at the end of the 2007/08 season. He joined Morecambe and made over 40 appearances. Rejoined Darlington in February 2012 with the club in dire financial circumstances.
